Introduction
We work closely with PEMANDU Associates in Malaysia during the Movement Control Order (MCO) and accomplished the first phase in just three weeks. This collaboration led to the development of the Global COVID-19 Index (GCI), a groundbreaking online platform. With an intuitive user interface and comprehensive data processing capabilities, GCI quickly emerged as an indispensable tool for monitoring and understanding the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on countries worldwide.
Challenge
The challenge was immense. To effectively gauge how different nations were managing the COVID-19 pandemic, we needed to collect, analyse, and present vast amounts of data. This included creating the GCI index and ranking, collaborating with the World Health Organisation for their index and ranking, sourcing travel analysis data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and obtaining critical vaccination data from Oxford University. The dynamic and ever-changing nature of the pandemic required a flexible methodology to account for the variable factors influencing COVID-19 cases.
Solution
The Global COVID-19 Index (GCI) provided an elegant solution. We developed an online platform with a user-friendly interface, simplifying access to crucial COVID-19 data. By consolidating data from esteemed institutions such as John Hopkins, WHO, IATA, and Oxford University, GCI offers a comprehensive view of each country’s pandemic response. The incorporation of a Monte Carlo simulation model in the GCI Recovery Forecasting methodology allows for a nuanced understanding of the factors contributing to changes in COVID-19 cases, accommodating local interventions and circumstances.
Result
The results have been outstanding. Through our collaboration with PEMANDU Associates in Malaysia and swift execution during the MCO, we delivered the first phase of GCI in just three weeks. GCI swiftly gained international recognition, receiving the Chairman’s Award at the 2020 WITSA Global ICT Excellence Awards. Endorsed by the World Health Organization, GCI provides daily updates on the recovery progress of 184 countries in their fight against COVID-19. This innovative platform has empowered governments, healthcare professionals, researchers, and the public with critical insights, informing decision-making and fostering global collaboration in responding to the pandemic. GCI has become a pivotal tool in shaping the world’s response to this unprecedented global crisis.
